THE MARKAS: An Anthology of Literary Works on Boko Haram (2019) Edited by Tanure Ojaide, Razinat T.

    1,500.00

Edited by Tanure Ojaide, Razinat T. Mohammed, Abubakar Othman.

This anthology is an outcome of literary writers’ reaction to the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-eastern part of Nigeria. Lives therein have not only been extensively disrupted by the group’s violent tactics and the mind-numbing levels of physical destruction and thousands of deaths, but also in the dislocation of millions of people, with most of them seeking refuge in urban centres, especially Maiduguri, for safety. These refugees, classified as Internally Displaced Persons and in camps guarded by Nigerian soldiers, have received worldwide attention. Writers in the affected areas and elsewhere in Nigeria have responded in their poetry, short stories, and non-fiction some of which are collected here.

THE OILY MARRIAGE : A Play (2018) – by Hope Eghagha

    1,000.00

The Oily Marriage, Professor Hope Eghagha’s third published play, delves into the socio-cultural and political conflicts, conflicting emotions, and dilemma which the discovery and exploitation of crude oil present to the people of the Niger Delta in Nigeria. It functions at the personal level and the level of inter-ethnic relations and how sometimes the solutions to problems become intertwined with and undermined by selfish and personal interests. The image of the exploiter looms large in the play as business and commerce are locked in mortal combat for the soul of the region. How these issues play out in the twenty-first century is the concern of the playwright in this fast-moving drama of ideas.

THE POETRY OF WOLE SOYINKA (1994) – by Tanure Ojaide

    1,000.00

The Nobel Laureate’s reputation as a dramatist tends to cloud his poetic achievement, and in modern African literature, poetry lives in the shadow of fiction. The criticism of Soyinka’s poetry has so far centred on his themes of individuality and death, his imagery, and on the controversy over his authenticity, obscurity and difficulty. Here, in a new approach, an academic himself and one of the leading younger generation of African poets, discusses critically the voice and viewpoint of the poet with the object of establishing Soyinka’s persona. The book covers the personality and world view of the man, as revealed in his poetry.

THE URHOBO LANGUAGE TODAY – (2007) – Tanure Ojaide & Rose Aziza (Edited by)

    1,000.00

This is a pioneering work on Urhobo language, and since language is not the restricted domain of only scholars of linguistics, other aspects of the language or issues that impinge on language use are also discussed in this collection of essays by a eleven experts drawn from research institutes and universities. Since literature is a vehicle of language, the proverbs and axioms of the language as well as the oratorical and performance traditions in Urhobo are also covered competently. Other cultural aspects, especially music, are also seen as enhancers of the language. To underscore the significance of religion and language, some contributors here examine the relationship between the Urhobo language and Christian evangelisation and between the language and the people’s belief systems. Another also explores the place of language in what has come to be known as Urhobo “disco” music. The essays reinforce each other and some points are repeated for emphasis because of their cultural significance. The closeness of several topics, especially the challenges of the language and culture and on evangelization in Urhobo as well as Gospel music in Urhobo, is intended to exhaustively open up the Urhobo language debate.

The beauty of Themes on the Nigerian Legal System lies in two most appealing facts: one, that it is a contribution from learned authors who are not only specialists in this specific area of Nigerian Law, but may also be found in institutions of learning throughout the length and breadth of the country, and, two, the authors have written in simple, easy-to-understand language, and we hope this will help. TWO MOTHERS AND A SON: A Play (2019) by Hope Eghagha

    600.00

Two Mothers and Son explores the seeming needless, perpetual conflict between wife and mother-in-law in a typical African marriage; it is set in twenty-first century Nigeria which itself is a victim of conflicting and confusing interruptions of life. The son who is at the centre of it all, is caught between two loves, both possessive and obsessive, equally important but suffocating in a most debilitating manner. Added to this is the issue of religion which attempts to resolve the crisis but inadvertently contributes to the sad resolution of the conflict.

WHITE MASK: POEMS (2019) by Ebi Yeibo

    1,000.00

    REVIEWS

“This collection of poetry both reflects and creates attitudes that we now regard as characteristic of our age – the crisis of nationhood and the burden of citizenship. Ebi Yeibo’s White Masks unambiguously exposes the dystopian nightmares of a nation and a people’s willing detachment from humanity. While some poets of his generation are content with dreaming of an ideal world, in White Masks, Yeibo, through the resources of memory, experiments with the idea of a better world.”

Professor Ogaga Okuyade, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

“…Ebi Yeibo’s White Masks is a collection inspired by hope. In whichever way it is read, it cannot but invite a political and social argument. Highly recommended to the discerning reader—to anyone who takes more than a passing interest in any aspect of modern Nigerian poetry.”

Professor Hyginus Ekwuazi, University of Ibadan, Nigeria

“…In theme, temper, and style, Yeibo reconfigures human experience in a manner that makes it ethereal. In White Masks, Yeibo charts new frontiers of human experience in culture, environment, spirituality, and history, while also foregrounding the nuances that give his earlier poetry its distinctiveness.”

Professor Sunday Awhefeada, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria
